Life with a 4C Beard

How It Began:

When creating a beard maintenance routine, African American men with longer, thick, course 4C beard hair have few more things to take into account than men of other hair types. First is the hydration, the skin is more likely to dry out easily. Choosing the right type of moisturizing cream is essential. When asked about the best brush or comb, historically there are few tool options to groom and style your beard.

1. Metal or plastic wide tooth comb

2. Boar Bristle Brush (widely known to distribute oils)

3. Metal, plastic, or wooden pick

Due to the nature of most 4C hair types, a rigid wooden or plastic won't glide easy through course curls. The nature of the bristle/comb teeth can influence how your moisturizer is distributed through your hair. Boar bristles have been known to distribute oils, but aren't the best option to brush your beard. You are simply transferring the product from your hair to your brush which leaves your hair stripped and brittle.  Often the next biggest problem after figuring the right product to use is to create the shape and style  you want. The only thing between you and optimizing your beard volume is the tools in your toolbox.
